How to Protect Figures From Dust and Sunlight

Collectible figures can look great on a desk, shelf, or display cabinet, but dust and sunlight can slowly affect their appearance. Dust makes the surface look dull, while long-term sunlight may cause color fading, yellowing, or material changes.

The good news is that figure protection does not need to be complicated. A few simple habits can keep your collection clean and display-ready.

Why Dust and Sunlight Matter

Most collectible figures are made from materials such as PVC, ABS, resin, or vinyl. These materials are durable for display, but they still need proper care.

Common problems include:

• Dust building up in small details
• Color fading from direct sunlight
• Yellowing on light-colored parts
• Sticky surface caused by poor storage
• Scratches from rough cleaning
• Box fading if packaging is displayed

For collectors, prevention is much easier than repair.

1. Keep Figures Away From Direct Sunlight

The most important rule is to avoid direct sunlight. A figure may look beautiful near a window, but long exposure can fade colors and weaken the surface finish.

Better places include:

• Shelves away from windows
• Display cabinets against interior walls
• Desk corners without direct sun
• Rooms with curtains or blinds

If your room gets strong sunlight, use curtains, UV window film, or move the figures to a shaded area.

2. Use a Display Case or Cabinet

A display case is one of the best ways to protect figures from dust. It keeps the collection visible while reducing daily cleaning.

Good options include:

• Acrylic display boxes
• Glass cabinets
• Shelf covers
• Enclosed display shelves
• Small desktop cases

For rare or expensive figures, an acrylic case is usually worth it. It also makes the figure look more organized and premium.

3. Dust Regularly With Soft Tools

Do not wait until dust becomes thick. Light cleaning is safer than heavy cleaning.

Use:

• Soft makeup brush
• Microfiber cloth
• Small air blower
• Anti-static brush
• Cotton swab for small areas

Avoid hard brushes, rough towels, wet wipes with alcohol, or strong cleaners. These may scratch the figure or damage painted details.

4. Clean Small Details Carefully

Figures with hair, hats, wings, clothing folds, bases, or accessories often collect dust in small gaps. Use a soft brush and clean slowly.

For very small areas, use a cotton swab or soft-tip cleaning stick. Do not press too hard around printed eyes, blush, lips, or metallic paint.

5. Control Room Humidity

Humidity can affect figures, boxes, and display shelves. A very humid room may cause mold, sticky surfaces, or damage to paper packaging.

Try to keep figures in a dry, ventilated space. Avoid placing them near:

• Bathrooms
• Humidifiers
• Windows with condensation
• Air-conditioner leaks
• Kitchen areas
• Damp storage rooms

If your room is humid, use silica gel packets or a small dehumidifier nearby.

6. Avoid Heat Sources

Heat can soften, deform, or discolor some figure materials. Keep figures away from:

• Radiators
• Heaters
• Strong LED strips placed too close
• Direct afternoon sunlight
• Computer exhaust vents
• Hot lamps

Display lighting is fine, but it should not make the figure surface warm.

7. Store Boxes Properly

Many collectors keep original boxes and cards. These also need protection from sunlight and moisture.

Store boxes in a dry place, away from direct sun. If possible, keep them in storage bins or cabinets. Do not stack heavy boxes on top of delicate packaging.

For blind box collectors, keeping the card, inner bag, and box together can help preserve the full collectible set.

8. Do Not Overcrowd the Display

Crowded shelves make cleaning harder and increase the chance of figures falling or rubbing against each other.

Leave some space between figures. This improves both appearance and protection. A clean display with fewer figures often looks better than a packed shelf.
